Meet Nakeia Newton, DNP, PMHNP-BC

Integrative Mental Health Nurse Practitioner & Founder of Renewal Mental Health & Wellness

Where science meets art, and healing meets you right where you are.

Q: So… what exactly do you do?

A: I help women feel like themselves again, especially when they’ve forgotten what that even feels like.

I’m a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner, but the way I work is a little different. Yes, I prescribe medication, but I also bring in plant medicine, somatic tools, and a lot of intentional listening. I created Renewal Mental Health & Wellness because I wanted women, especially Black women, to have access to care that sees the whole person, not just a list of symptoms.

Q: Why women’s mental health?

A: Because I get it. I’ve lived through the anxiety, the over-functioning, the silent burnout. I’ve sat with clients who were told their pain was just “hormones” or brushed off entirely.  I know how powerful it is to feel seen. My education gave me a strong clinical foundation. I’m a DNP and board-certified, but it’s my own journey, and the women I work with, who’ve taught me the most.

Q: What kinds of things do you treat?

A: A lot of what I see doesn’t always fit neatly into a diagnosis. There’s anxiety, depression, PMDD, postpartum challenges, trauma, and also a deep sense of disconnection that many women carry. I help my clients return to themselves through intentional care that makes space for the body, mind, and spirit.

Q: What’s your vibe as a provider?

A: I’m real, thoughtful, and collaborative. You don’t need to perform or have it all figured out here. I believe in slowing down, asking the right questions, and creating space for real healing.

Q: What lights you up outside of work?

A: Travel, for sure. I love exploring indigenous cultures, especially learning about their plant medicine, spices, and traditional healing practices. And the food? I always bring recipes home with me. After Thailand, pad thai was in heavy rotation for a while. Cooking helps me stay connected to where I’ve been and is one of the ways I care for myself.

Q: What’s your favorite part of this work?

A: Watching women come back to themselves.

There is something powerful about witnessing someone shift from survival into actual living. That never gets old.

Q: Okay, now for the fun stuff—what’s your go-to tea when you’re overwhelmed?

A: Passionflower, lemon balm, or damiana. I love psychoactive teas. They really highlight the healing to be found in nature.

Q: What’s something most people don’t know about you?

A: I’m a clumsy Aries who will absolutely trip while carrying a matcha. I love to sing, especially 90s neo-soul, but let’s just say I’m not quitting my day job. I’ve been deep in a Maxwell and D’Angelo phase lately. I’m also a pescatarian and an absolute foodie! If it involves good music, good flavor, or a deep conversation, I’m in.

Q: Who is Renewal for?

A: Women who are ready for care that centers their unique needs. It’s for the high-achievers who are quietly unraveling. The ones who’ve done therapy but still feel stuck. It’s for women who want to feel better and feel like themselves again.

Q: Any words for someone who’s on the fence about reaching out?

A: You don’t need to have it all together to start. You just need to be open to something different. If you're tired, overwhelmed, or just curious about what healing could actually feel like, this might be the right place.
